British new wave icons Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark rocked the House of Blues in Boston on Sunday night, celebrating their 40th anniversary with their Souvenir US Tour.
Kicking the evening off was California based indie band In The Valley Below, with an atmospheric blend of pop and electronic sounds. The duo, with a sultry energy, captivated the crowd with tracks like “Pink Chateau” and “Dove Season”, as well as their newest single, “Lie With Me”.
At around 9pm, the lights went down and “Atomic Ranch” would introduce the band. Singer Andy McCluskey slowly started building up the energy until the dance party exploded with “Messages”, off their 1980 self-titled debut album. The show would be a celebration of OMD’s 40 year career, from deep tracks to some of the most iconic 80’s hits. Paul Humphreys would step down from the keyboards to take over lead vocals for “(Forever) Live and Die” and “Souvenir”. The entire band then would move on to take spots in the front for a truly synth heavy set, including B-side “Almost”.
Boston fans were up and dancing the entire night. Many seemed to be reliving good memories, friends laughing and couples embracing. The love the crowd has for the band was palpable, reaching it’s height with monster hits “Enola Gay”and “If You Leave”. OMD would close the show where it all began, with debut single “Electricity”. Those who stayed home truly missed out on a great party, make sure to be there in a city near you.
