Weekly Roundup: April 18

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup
playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. This week is full of familiar faces, but we also have some new discoveries that we think you’ll dig.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “About Damn Time” – Lizzo
Time after time Lizzo has proven that she succeeds with flying colors at creating catchy pop/r&b hits, and “About Damn Time” is no exception. With a funky bass line and lyrics like “I’m not the girl I was or used to be / b*tch, I might be better,” how can this song NOT win you over?

2. “Silence” – Antelope
After we included their song “Wolf At the Door” on the Weekly Roundup a couple of weeks ago, this writer was hooked with Antelope and curious to hear what their new EP would sound like. Well, turns out the whole thing is just as good as that single. “Silence” fulfills this week’s 90’s alt/rock craving in so many ways, you won’t want to miss out.

3.  “I’d Be Lying” – Drew Schueler
Do you enjoy Lauv, Justin Bieber, or Charlie Puth? Then chances are you’ll dig Drew Schueler. After just one listen we had a hard time getting this falsetto-laden chorus out of our heads. If you’re experiencing heartache, this one will hit home even more.

4. “Sleepyhead” – Madeleine Kelson
It’s hard to not like Madeline Kelson. The artist’s entire feel is authentic, seemingly not prone to trends or what’s popular. The alt/country/folk sound certainly isn’t new or out of style, but just by listening to these tunes you can tell it’s what comes naturally. Furthermore, it’s nice to hear songs that are not only good, but crafted with organic production work that highlights everything from the vocals and lyrics to the instrumentation.

5. “Circling the Drain” – Microwave
With a beginning that recalls Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So,” Microwave’s latest had our attention from the get-go. Sonically the song’s structure seems to literally circle the drain, with chord structures that go round and round in both the verses and choruses, creating a hypnotic listen. We guarantee you’ll be playing this track more than once.
