London-based trio Dream Wife are currently bringing the energy to venues across the UK on their 12-date tour. We joined them at The Wedgewood Rooms venue in Portsmouth. The tour follows the band’s explosive second album So When You Gonna, and was originally scheduled for last year, but delayed by the inevitable pandemic.
Vocalist Rakel Mjoll, guitarist Alice Go, and bassist Bella Podpadec were all in superb form, providing a night of high adrenaline, high temperatures, and high kicks. Even a damaged and strapped knee didn’t stop Bella literally jousting with Alice across the stage. The band played fourteen songs in their set, across their back-catalogue and from the new album. Favourites included “Hasta La Vista”, “Sports!”, and “Hot”. Rakel said it has been so fun to play the songs live finally on tour, “they were designed to be played live”, and that it was great to be back in Portsmouth at The Wedgewood Rooms.
The band’s energy was infectious, and no matter who you were, it was hard not to join in with the almost rhythmic chanting of the band’s “bad bitches” message. Rakel said to the packed crowd, “all you have to do to be a bad bitch”, pauses, “you don’t even need to be a bitch”, staring at the crowd, “is to support your fellow bad bitches”. A night of great music, high energy, and plenty of bad bitches.
Support, for all shows on the tour, was from Lucia and the Best Boys, a great indie rock band from Glasgow.
