This past Thursday night, indie-pop band Grouplove brought their infectious and upbeat sound to New York City’s Brooklyn Steel. That same day was frontwoman Hannah Hooper’s birthday, and they let everyone in on the joyous celebration.
New York City’s own Melt kicked off the night, lighting up the stage with their catchy indie-soul sound. The seven piece band are extremely talented and frontwoman Veronica Stewart-Frommer created many new fans with her beautiful voice and positive stage presence.
Grouplove then entered the stage to a crowd of excited, cheering fans. They kicked off their set with “Just What You Want” from their latest album This Is This, released in March of 2021, before playing through the rest of their twenty song set. The entire band was excited and happy throughout the set, and radiated so much positive energy for the entire duration of their performance. Every audience member appeared to be having the time of their life, some stating that they had been at the venue since early in the morning in order to get a spot in the front.
As stated previously, it was Hannah Hooper’s birthday and many audience members were holding signs wishing her a happy one and other positive messages. During the encore, the band’s crew members brought out a cake and balloons for Hooper and the audience sang her “Happy Birthday” once more. Throughout their set, the band kept expressing gratitude for being able to play on this special night, and even debuted a few new songs. The songs, tentatively titled “Star” and “Stay Close to the Cheese” have the same indie-pop sound that Grouplove is known for and are a great insight into what is next for the band.
