Weekly Roundup: Feb 21

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. Want to discover your next favorite pop punk artist, find a breakup song you can cry/dance to, or envision yourself on a summer road trip? We’ve got you covered.

Here are some of the highlights:

1. “1-800-LOVELINE” – The Lovelines
With hypnotic vocals and a catchy refrain, good luck getting this song out of your head (though we think you may be totally cool with it living rent-free up there). This highly dance-able track is just the kind of thing we crave to help shake our mid-winter blues, and seeing as The Lovelines are a brand new band, we have a feeling they’ll be giving us some more pop gems over the coming months. This is a group you’re going to want to watch.

2. “Over It” – Ali Slater ft. Jacky Vincent
If you’ve been paying attention to mainstream music at all over the past couple of years, you’ve probably heard that “pop punk is back!” This track by newcomer Ali Slater echos that sentiment, drawing inspiration from Riot-era Paramore, Hey Monday, and the like. Prepare to crank up your stereo (or, more likely, your phone) and put this breakup anthem on blast.

3. “Trouble” – Troye Sivan ft. Jay Som
We’re loving this dreamy collaboration between Troye Sivan and Jay Som, and we’re thinking that you will too. Though it’s clearly pop, there’s still a tender sentimentality that’s maintained throughout the track, and lyrically the subject matter hints at something more than your typical Top 40 love song: “I’m tired of livin’ like I’m dyin’/ But now I can’t find the silver lining like before / You’ve got a funny sense of timin’ / Showed up on the night I stopped tryin’ for something more.”

4. “Gucci Knife” – Carlie Hanson ft. MASN
The pain in Carlie Hanson’s voice is evident from the first moment of this song, so much so that by the time the artist reaches the visceral line about an ex-lover who “took her heart out with a Gucci knife” it’s enough to make you cringe. There’s a strange solace in heartbreak being made into such a catchy tune; you can simultaneously relate to the despair while still finding some sliver of hope in your enjoyment of the music. This song will definitely do that for you.

5. “Ride of My Life” – Souls Extolled
The opening guitar of this one immediately brings to mind Kings of Leon, but soon after Souls Extolled morphs the song into its own unique character, which is especially accentuated by the dreamlike, yet emotional, vocals. The singer laments a lost love, crooning that “I’ve forgiven you, but I cannot forgive myself,” before admitting that he hopes to see them again. Clocking in at just under 3 minutes, this one transports us to driving a long and winding stretch of highway in the summertime. We encourage you to give it a listen and see if you feel the same.
