There is reason to believe that nothing good can happen at 4 in the morning. It is a time when most of us are asleep, recharging for the hours ahead. Those who are awake are probably running on fumes, trying to finish a last-minute project or tending to some kind of emergency. So, if you were to get a phone call at such an odd hour, even if it was from indie artist Will Joseph Cook, would you answer?
Will’s first release of 2022, “4AM” serves as an ode to that late-night call and all of the emotion that it entails. The track starts out slow and steady, with scattered horns and a meandering melody that takes its time meeting all of the peaks and dips. But then, the adrenaline kicks in and leads to cinematic choruses that are simply irresistible. Unapologetically, Will sings, “Emotion / Rushing like a foreign car / Here I am / Calling at 4AM,” giving it all he’s got. You can check it out below.
Giving us more background about the track, Will reveals,
“Conceptually, ‘4AM’ is this really overly poetic voicemail for someone you love. A rush of emotions you want to share but there’s no one up to hear them. I had initially written the verse as an a cappella and then at home one night, I built up the big instrumental chorus. It wasn’t until I was actually recording some new music in Mexico that the track fully came to life. I was literally wide awake at 4am sending voice notes and those feelings gave me the rest of the song. I recorded so many sounds of the city from my apartment window that night – they’re all buried under the instruments.”
You can listen to “4AM” on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
