As we make our way in life, there are going to be times when we have to either accept what is, and times when we have to take matters into our own hands. This was a realization that came to rapper Ty Brasel during his third semester of college, when he had to decide whether he wanted to remain on the troubled path he was on or change lanes completely. Ever since, Ty began to work on himself and determine what he wanted from life, which has influenced the uplifting singles and albums that he has released up to this point. After finding much success with last year’s The Divine Storm, Ty is back to give us Destiny: Vol. 1, featuring 13 tracks that capture what it means to chase after something bigger than yourself.
Throughout the album, Ty shares personal anecdotes and words of encouragement that relate to working towards what is meant to be in life. On “Shine” and “All I Got,” for instance, Ty describes what it means to keep going and to do your best – even when times are tough. He expands on this notion even further on other tracks like “Right My Wrongs,” where he shows that it is not always easy to work through your problems. In the end though, you have to put yourself out there and believe in getting second chances, as he so describes on the levelheaded “Chances.”
All of the tracks have a certain calmness to them that adds to their overall appeal, with Ty not being afraid to swap out a few rap verses for more melodic passages. With the album focusing on perseverance and trusting yourself, it makes sense that we would not have anything too hard-hitting or overtly powerful. Ty really sets us up with these smooth tracks, especially towards the end of the album with the pop-leaning “Halo” and “Call Me Up.” The mellow ambience that is created on each track is almost tangible and moves us right along from one song to the next.
There is also a number of collaborations on Destiny: Vol. 1, bringing an edge to what we hear. Ty teams up with Jenna Wright on the driving “On Me,” which sifts through the pressure of keeping things together. Additionally, we get guest vocals from J. Monty on “4 The Stars,” who feeds off Ty’s energy to deliver swift lines about rising above the things that bring you down. By giving us these special collaborations on the album, Ty makes the project pop even more and draws attention to others out there we need to notice.
Overall, Destiny: Vol. 1 lives up to its name. Ty has tapped into feelings and experiences that define his purpose, taking us on an insightful journey. By telling us about the ways in which he works towards his destiny, Ty then shapes the way we manifest ours. And by giving us this substantial combination of tracks, he demonstrates that there is more than one way to look at and support your dreams.
