Pop newcomer UPSAHL has had a pretty massive 2021 — she’s released her debut album Lady Jesus filled with top-tier hits, an announcement that she’ll hop on Yungblud’s enormous 2022 tour, and a current slot opening for Olivia O’Brien on her tour supporting this year’s Episodes along with drumaq. “The Olivia O’Brien Show” rolled into Atlanta last week, and the fiery artist made an impression in her support slot that shows she won’t be in the support role much longer.
UPSAHL and her two-piece band came on with an intense energy that I haven’t seen at a pop show in some time. Deftly switching between guitar, bass, and casually strutting about the stage, the 22-year-old had an utter command of the stage that was incredibly impressive. Songs like “Time of My Life” and “Douchebag” electrified the crowd with an undeniable energy, turning Variety Playhouse into a punk venue that had fans honest-to-god moshing for the Phoenix, AZ-based singer. It was a set with few words, with UPSAHL instead deciding to run through her set with startling precision and perfection. If you weren’t a fan of UPSAHL going into the set, it was impossible to leave without bowing down to what might be one of pop’s new overlords.
