Mitski Announces New Album Laurel Hell with “The Only Heartbreaker”

Date:

Friends, Romans, and assorted sad people — Mitski season is upon us. After the release of her comeback single “Working For The Knife” and the announcement of a 2022 tour that instantly sold out, today we’ve received word of her first record since 2018’s star-making Be The Cowboy.

Laurel Hell is due out on February 4th via Dead Oceans, and it is a hard pivot away from the Americana-inspired sound of Be The Cowboy. Based upon today’s single “The Only Heartbreaker”, it sounds as if Mitski is headed towards an 80s renaissance, and it’s just as impressive as her discography up to this point. In a press release, Mitski shared the following:

“I needed love songs about real relationships that are not power struggles to be won or lost. I needed songs that could help me forgive both others and myself. I make mistakes all the time. I don’t want to put on a front where I’m a role model, but I’m also not a bad person. I needed to create this space mostly for myself where I sat in that gray area.”

“The Only Heartbreaker” was written with Dan Wilson (former frontman of Semisonic and current writer of pop hits with The Chicks, Adele, and Taylor Swift), and it’s an intense look at a relationship on the rocks. Watch the video for “The Only Heartbreaker” below and check her website for tour dates — maybe you can score some tickets to the sold-out tour.
