Royals give “Stay” the pop punk treatment

Date:

Two years ago, Royals used their pop punk skills to release a fresh cover of Taylor Swift’s “ME!,” giving the playful pop tune an infectious rock flair.  The cover showed the band’s impeccable ability to mix light and lively melodies with striking guitar and percussive elements, which can be heard across the two EPs that Royals have released thus far.  Their version of “ME!” is even one of their most popular tracks to date, with fans claiming that it is better than the original.  If Royals could get this type of recognition for such a cover, then why not try to do it again?

Tackling another massive pop hit, Royals shine the pop punk spotlight on “Stay” by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber.  Originally, the track was released in early July as the lead single for LAROI’s F*CK LOVE 3:  OVER YOU EP, which dropped later that month.  The track found major success, of course, topping different charts around the world and becoming LAROI’s first-ever chart-topping hit in the US.  Nearly three months later, the track is still going strong, currently sitting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 charts.

With so much acclaim, it makes sense for Royals to tackle this decadent track.  Pairing the song’s catchy synth motif with edgy guitar work and punctuating the air with dynamic downbeats, Royals work their pop punk magic yet again.  The track would be nothing without its original melodies and vocal lines, though, inspiring lead vocalist Luke Smithson to preserve the heart of the song.  Check out how their cover holds up in the music video below.

Royals’ “Stay” marks their first release since dropping their A Spark To Ignite EP back in June.  You can listen to the EP, along with more of Royals’ music, over on Apple Music and Spotify.

Grab tickets for Royals’ upcoming shows in London at Hope & Anchor on October 30 and in Southampton at The 1865 on October 31 here.
