Carlie Hanson is ready to cut off more than just a friendship on “Off My Neck”

Date:

If there is one thing to take from the music of Carlie Hanson, it is that the alt-pop artist is a very caring person.  Beneath the angst and the rage that you so often hear on her singles and EPs is a soft spot for friendships and relationships – things that Carlie fights to preserve.  If you cross or deceive her in any way, she will let you know through a catchy, expressive single.  Whoever Carlie sings about in her latest release, “Off My Neck,” should be concerned.

A pop song with a classic Carlie edge, “Off My Neck” features the frustration and disappointment that comes when a friendship reaches its breaking point.  The scream-worthy lyrics and lively sonic production bolster Carlie’s pain as she shares her side of the story.  She constantly thinks about what went wrong, making her want to cut off her head just to clear her mind.  It all leads up to the biting bridge, where Carlie plainly reveals, “I wish we never met.”

The music video, which was directed by Ryan Baxley, artfully captures the spirit of the track.  We see Carlie on a hill overlooking Los Angeles, surrounded by people and objects that are not entirely what they seem.  As she dances and interacts with what is going on around her, she pours her heart into performing the track, tying everything together.  You can check it out below.

“Off My Neck” is from Carlie’s upcoming debut album, which is yet to be announced.  In the meantime, you can listen to the track on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

Tickets for Carlie’s show at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles tomorrow is sold out, but you can still get tickets to see her at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta here.
