Back in April, our friends in Sorry Ghost announced that they were expecting…a brand new single! Proud parents, Dan Anton and Matt Polito, teased makeshift sonogram photos and went as far as holding a baby shower for the track on Instagram, eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new bundle. When “Like a Thief” finally dropped a few weeks ago, it was love at first listen. Fans of the pop punk band, as well as those new to the group, could not deny the track’s emo charm, helping it earn coveted spots on various Spotify playlists, such as New Noise, New Punk Tracks, and All New Rock.
On “Like a Thief,” Dan and Matt take us into a world full of mystery and suspense. Set to the band’s signature “pessimistic optimist” sound, the lyrics and music work together to bring us both dread and hope. Dan sings about “promises that lead astray” and being “encouraged by the hopes of a new yesterday,” providing conflicting, yet very visual, imagery. All in all, we decide what we do with the “map” that we are given in life, as the track implies towards the end.
The video for “Like a Thief” is a little less vague than the track, but just as creative and energetic. On a quest to find happiness, Dan and Matt search all around California, from its snowy slopes to sandy beaches. As they pick up and bag meaningful items along the way, the boys fully lose themselves in the journey, showing that true happiness is not always found in material items. You can check it out below.
Sorry Ghost is gearing up to release more new music next month, taking full advantage of this prime time for summer music. Until then, you can listen to “Like a Thief” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
