INTERVIEW: Your Smith

Date:

If you’re not listening to Your Smith yet, you seriously need to start! During the early stages of her career, she released music under her given name, Caroline Smith, and then took on her new identity, Your Smith, a fearless and unapologetic version of herself. She signed with Neon Gold Records in 2018. After releasing 2 EPs and supporting K. Flay, Matt Maeson, and X Ambassadors on tour, Your Smith is finally on her first headlining tour, and Melodic got the chance to interview her about it. Your Smith’s two EPs, Wild Wild Woman and Bad Habit are out now via Neon Gold Records.

Melodic: How does it feel to be on your first headlining tour?

Your Smith: It feels weird I have to say! I’m so used to being the support act I’m like, wait all this food on the green room table is mine? I don’t have to rush through a soundcheck?

Melodic: What can we expect from Your Smith’s headlining show that is different from your shows as an opener? Are there any surprises in store?

Your Smith: There are always surprises in store at a Your Smith show. But I think the biggest thing is the production. I brought on a lighting tech for this tour and it’s been a blast conceptualizing the show from a visual perspective.

Melodic: Do you have a favorite city that you’re looking forward to visiting on tour?

Your Smith: I’m in Seattle tonight and though it’s pouring rain, this has become one of my favorite cities to play and hang out in. It reminds me a lot of home (Minneapolis).

Melodic: What is your favorite thing about being on tour? Least favorite?

Your Smith: I’m a busy body so I love how much work tour is. There’s never any time to over think or get anxious haha. My least favorite is probably how pent up you can feel. I’m big on running to keep my head clear and sometimes you gotta choose between sleep or exercise because there’s just not enough time in the schedule.

Melodic: What song do you get most excited to perform live and why?

I love the actual connection part of music. I love getting to physically meet and perform for the people that connect with my music. It’s such an amazing reminder as to why I do what I do.

Melodic: What experience do you hope to create for your audience on this tour?

Your Smith: I want people to just have fun and feel things and dance and yell and leave feeling like they can just be themselves.

Melodic: Who are your biggest influences for you music?

Your Smith: Always such a hard question to answer but since I just bought tickets to her Hollywood bowl show, I’ll say Alanis. She is a huge one always.

Melodic: How has your experience as an artist changed since signing with Neon Gold?

Your Smith: Having a team that lets you do whatever you want to do really changes your quality of life, man, I gotta say. I’m so much happier with a team that stands behind me no matter what.

Melodic: What was your experience shooting the video for “Man or Weakness?” Was doing everything in 1 take difficult?

Your Smith: No it was so so fun. The video was easy because it was so 100% me so I didn’t have to over think it at all. They’d just call action and I’d just start dancing.

Melodic: You have created an alter ego like character with your stage name. Are Caroline and Your Smith completely separate to you or are there moments where they feel merged?

Your Smith: I feel Your Smith has imparted a lot of new wisdom on Caroline. Namely not apologizing for yourself and what you want.
