LIVE REVIEW: Ruby Fields // Newcastle

Date:

It’s Friday the 20th of December 2019, and Ruby Fields hits the stage of the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle for her largest headline sold out show to date. Joined by four-piece Brisbane-based support act: Perve Endings, as well as Melbourne ‘Grunge-Infused’ rock band- LOSER, the packed-out Cambridge Main Room perfectly suited the unique songs of the three bands of the night.

Sydney’s Ruby Fields is no stranger to the Newcastle music scene, heavily conveyed by her natural and comfortable stage presence in such a large room. Joined by her band, who were, without-a-doubt born performers, and a crowd of adoring fans- the show was sure to go down in history as one of The Cambridge Hotel’s most notable gigs. From the moment Ruby walked onto stage and took her first sip of beer before playing the first memorable guitar strums of ‘Fairly Lame Fairly Tame’, the audience was certain to have a huge night.

Crowd favourites ‘Trouble’, ‘I Want’, and ‘Ritalin’, pleased the audience- who passionately screamed the lyrics to songs that I would be happy to deem some of the biggest pub classics for the newest generation of Australians. It seemed almost to be a pre-requisite to know every lyric to every one of the young musicians’ songs. Ruby showed a considerate understanding of her audience, with just enough banter to create a careful balance between connecting with her fans and playing all the songs they expected.

Time seemed to speed by, as she began to wrap up the set, breaking it up a bit with her newest song ‘Smile’, which proved to already be a crowd favourite. Finally, she concluded the night with ‘Climate’ and 2018 Hottest 100 favourite (Number 9 in the countdown) ‘Dinosaurs’, two of which the crowd went extra crazy. The show finished, with the audiences leaking from the venue covered in sweat, knowing that they had just had one of the biggest nights of 2019.

Beers were spilt, voices lost, but all in all- Ruby Fields poured her heart, soul and energy into performing a show that no one would forget for a long time to come.
