A well-dressed crowd packed the Fillmore in Philadelphia for a sold out, soulful night with #MixtapeDan, Daniel Caesar. Multi-talented artist Koffee kicked off with a high-energy performance. Her stage presence packs a punch, and her music had even us in the photo pit nodding along– it’s infectious, beat after beat.
Daniel Caesar is an absolute mastermind. His show isn’t about him, it’s about the vibe. The lights hardly spent a minute on Daniel’s face, instead engulfing him in a strobe that cast over the audience, perfectly representative of his rolling, smooth vocals and his intricate instrumentation casting a spell over the thousands of adoring fans. His graphics are brilliant, his band is hyper-talented, and his music is unlike most of what I’ve heard. It’s not just me- people scream praise at him from even the highest wings of the audience. He’s got a litany of famous fans. He carries an aura of charm and humility, but he’s pure genius, and the industry is warming up quickly to him, bolstering his success with the release of his most recent record, CASE STUDY 01. He is one of this generation’s absolute greatest songwriters and musicians, finishing the show with a sprawling encore rife with ad-libs and stream of consciousness between him and the acoustic guitar- and yes, it was one of the most magical things that I and anyone there have ever seen. Don’t believe me? Spend one night at a show. You’ll come home a super-fan, just like the rest of us.
