Tame Impala’s final show of their summer tour was nothing short of euphoric. The Australian psych rock project is led by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker; a jack of all trades, Parker writes, records, produces, and performs all of Tame Impala’s music. On Sunday night, Parker and his backing band turned up for the final show of their tour and the second of two sold out shows at Washington DC’s The Anthem. I cannot remember the last time I experienced such an awe-inspiring concert. Opening with the lengthy and entrancing “Let It Happen,” Tame Impala set the tone for the night with rich, colorful visuals and an explosion of rainbow confetti that rained down over the audience. Each song that followed was accompanied by a kaleidoscope of dizzying visuals, sporadic bursts of confetti, and mesmerizing lasers, strung together with Kevin Parker’s shimmery, hypnotizing vocals. It was quite the experience, and at the end of the show, as the final notes of “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” played out, each person in the audience seemed to have the same dazed, almost unbelieving look on their faces.
