The explosive SASAMI rolled into Nashville’s EXIT/IN last night and put on a show worth remembering. Supporting Snail Mail, the songwriter unleashed an energetic and entertaining live show with the tracks from her 2019 self-titled release. I walked into this show well-versed with the songs from her album (it’s one of my favorites of 2019), but I was ultimately unprepared for how intense SASAMI’s shows are when compared to the solemn nature of the album. Backed by a drummer and bassist (sporting a walking boot after an injury the previous night), the songwriter tore into tracks such as “Morning Comes” and “Pacify My Heart” with an intensity that rivaled any punk rock show that I’ve seen this year. SASAMI brought the songs new life, rocking out and bouncing around the stage as the sold-out crowd lapped it up. The last time I saw Snail Mail, she was performing in a similar support role for Japanese Breakfast, and she arguably stole the show. SASAMI played the same role last night, and it’s exciting to see this music industry veteran (formerly of Cherry Glazerr) step into the spotlight with great songs and an even better live show.
