Amaal Nuux recently announced that her debut project Black Dove is set for release on July 12 via Universal Music Canada/Public Records. In case you are not already familiar with the very talented artist, check out our previous coverage of her here — as she is a talent that you definitely do not want to miss.
The announcement came in the form of an Instagram post which gave insight into the concept behind Black Dove and the theme of the project itself. Amaal specifically wrote, “Black dove means to me freedom. Freedom of my own captivity. Freedom of the shackles society placed on me! It means no longer committing a disservice to myself and owning every part of me. It’s having the courage to show up and recognizing true strength is in being vulnerable. It’s Breaking down to rebuild and running to the other side of my fears.” We are excited to see how this motif plays out in the body of work and what is yet to come.
The anticipation from this project comes on behalf of not only the talent that she carries as an artist, however, all of her achievement up to this date as well. Her first Black Dove single, “Not What I Thought,” received over 1 million views on YouTube and lead Amaal to be featured as Apple Canada’s best new artist of the week in February. Her latter single “Coming and Going” received over 350 000 views on YouTube, was named one of the best music releases of the week by both Nylon and The Independent, and was well received by our team at Melodic (which can be found here).
The entire tracklist of the project is as follows:
- Let Go
- Not What I Thought
- So What
- Later
- Coming & Going
- Scream
With four brand new songs and a story that is yet to be told, July 12 is setting out to be a great day for music.

[…] The second track — “Not What I Thought” — is one of two previously released singles. This track effectively demonstrates Amaal’s vocal range and power to create a song with little help from much besides her voice. Our full review for this song can be found here. […]
