If there’s one thing I learned at the Rival Sons show, it’s that rock and roll is alive and well. The five-piece rock band from Long Beach wrapped up their North American tour with a fantastic sold out show at The Fonda this past Thursday night. At one point lead singer Jay Buchanan told the crowd that he could play all night, and it felt almost like he was reluctant to end the show and thus conclude this leg of the tour. If every show was similar to the one I experienced, then his reluctance is more than understandable; I can’t remember the last time I attended such a fun and energetic concert. While the crowd was partially responsible for said energy, it could mostly be attributed to Buchanan’s captivating vocals and fiery stage presence, as well as the – for lack of a better word – shredding done by guitarist Scott Holiday. There was a palpable buzz throughout the packed venue, and when, during their performance of ‘Electric Man,’ Buchanan sang “I’m electric, yes I am,” it was hard not to believe him.
