We have almost two weeks to go until the new live-action version of Disney’s Aladdin hits theaters. It is sure to feature some of our favorite songs, but fortunately, we do not have to wait as long to hear one of them. Former One Direction member, Zayn, and R&B artist, Zhavia Ward, have released their version of “A Whole New World,” which will be playing during the closing credits of the film. While the old version of the song from the 1992 cartoon will always be legendary, this new version puts a modern spin on the classic, but maintains its originality.
The track begins with a slightly different intro than the original, before Zayn comes in with the first verse. When we get to the chorus, we get some modern-sounding beats. The chorus is also where Zhavia Ward comes in, picking up where Zayn’s part leaves off before going into her verse. The melodies and phrases stay the same as the original, so fans of the song will be able to sing along.
In the music video, we see Zayn and Zhavia, but never at the same time. They appear in different parts of New York, but never manage to meet up. It is a little bittersweet, as the song is about being together with someone who wants to be by your side, exploring the world with you. I like to think that the two of them will meet up eventually-maybe they just need to find that magic carpet.
