The American bluesy rock band Dorothy took a dimly lit stage at Terminal West this week, drawing a lively crowd for their stop on The Freedom Tour. Following a rowdy opening set from Spirit Animal, Dorothy, fronted by singer Dorothy Martin, embraced a dramatic fog entrance on stage – Martin arriving last in a billowy all-black outfit, smudged the room with sage before turning to the audience with a smile. Despite the witchy aesthetic, Martin radiated a presence that was both endearing and enrapturing. Throughout the performance she would smile for fan photos, even walking towards them while singing for video; with a barricade predominantly lined with VIP laminates, it was clear that Martin held a strong connection with her audience. The band played with a level of familiarity and cohesion that would lead you to believe they’d been touring for decades, despite their first release being only 5 years old.
