After LANY dropped their massive 16-track debut album last year, it seemed like we would all be in for the standard two or three year waiting period before getting the next album.  However, sometimes life gets way too real and before you know it, you are making another album and releasing it to the world.

This latest release, Malibu Nights, is classic LANY, full of moving lyrics and beautiful synth-pop.  For those who have been following LANY this past year, we know that this is a breakup album and we know who Paul is describing in these songs.  After dropping several singles earlier this year, such as “Thru These Tears” and “I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore,” it was clear that this album was going to be intense.

The album starts with one of my favorite tracks, “Thick And Thin.”  Right away, we get an infectious beat that stays constant throughout the track.  Even though the lyrics focus on that moment when a relationship is nearing an end, I can’t help but feel like dancing.  I don’t mean that the relationship was so horrible that the impending breakup makes me want to celebrate; the music is just so upbeat that I have this urge to dance.

The next few songs are similar, with heartbreaking lyrics and energetic music, until we get to a track called “Let Me Know.”  Placed right in the middle of the album, this track forms a balance between the songs we just heard and the ones were are about to hear.  It is a little more subdued, with a slower tempo and less instrumentals.  However, the lyrics are just as crushing, as they continue on with the breakup narrative.

As the album nears the end, we are given songs that are still very honest and gut-wrenching, but are a little more straightforward.  The music is not as prominent and you very much focus on the lyrics.  Before we know it, that final track is upon us and almost all of our tissues have been used from the box.  This last track, which is the title track, is a piano ballad and leaves us with the hope that Paul will be okay.  While the hope is fleeting, “Can I hold on for another night; what do I do with all this time,” we know that Paul will get through it because he has “way too much time to be this hurt.”  Music was a very good use of his time during this breakup and I know that this album will help a lot of other people going through a similar situation.

You can stream Malibu Nights on sites such as Apple Music and Spotify.
