I traveled eight-hundred and fifty miles to Houston, Texas in July. That’s right. Texas in July. The one thing that could convince me to travel the hottest place on earth is K-pop. On July 8th, as the sun was setting, I entered the NRG, unable to contain my excitement. This was it; I was finally going to see the band that introduced me to the K-pop scene, Got7. The group consisting of the seven-member, Jinyoung, JB, Jackson, Mark, BamBam, Youngjae, and Yugyeom, first debuted in 2014.
As the lights started to dim, the crowd’s energy became almost tangible. The green glow sticks illuminated the arena. This was one of the most amazing performances I have ever experienced. Playing songs from their earlier albums like “Teenager”, “Never Ever”, “If You Do”, and “My Home”, Got7 did not disappoint. The set was jam packed with their most famous hits.
There was a point in the show where the members took a break, for the drama portion of the event. The screen lit up like a firework, telling a story of a boy with a broken heart. The group came out and sang a song that correlated with that part of the story and then the story would continue. This was a perfectly executed way for the group to explain the meaning behind their songs. From start to finish the group danced and performed beautifully.
It was clear that the they were comfortable with the audience, laughing, dancing, and having fun. Throughout the night all members continually went to great lengths to express their gratitude for their audience, even playing “Thank You” from their new album towards the end of the set.
Excited cheers erupted as Jinyoung began singing “Look”. Their new album, Eyes on You, came out this year. The album has already gained the group an even greater following with their hit song “Look”. “Look” happens to have been co-written by the groups very own leader, JB. This new album was completely Got7. It had their almost signature feel with groovy beats mixed with sincerity and love.
The group ending with letting the fans know they will continue to work hard so their fans can continue to be proud to be “ahgase”. They even let it slip that when they return home to South Korea they will be working on a new album. I personally cannot wait to be continually impressed by Got7.
