For fans of: Radiohead, The Killers, and Mumford and Sons
Matthew Carroll is a singer-songwriter and band leader out of Birmingham, Alabama. He performed covers for nearly 10 years, and after a health scare that almost caused him to lose his singing voice forever, he decided he couldn’t waste the time he had with it on singing other people’s music. After a full year process working on an album, a process that started with 200 original songs, Carroll’s debut album Left to Burn was released on February 1st, 2018. Carroll’s album is a fluid combination of late 90’s to early 2000’s alternative rock and acoustic indie-pop. If I had to pick a song that defines the album, I would have to go with “Backup Man.” While it has a little bit of a different sound than the rest of Left to Burn, it brings in a bunch of different vibes, which, in my opinion, sums up Carroll’s music perfectly. “Backup Man” brings together indie-esque vocals, rock-esque instrumentals, and jazz-esque accents that create a sound that is unique to Carroll and to Left to Burn. After listening through the album, I can confidently say that anyone who has been known to like indie-rock will truly enjoy the album. Check out Matthew Carroll with the links below!
