Have you ever been so blown away by a set that you have no idea how to start describing it? I experienced this feeling with Rostam‘s performance in Birmingham, as the former Vampire Weekend member played a set that has not left my mind since I witnessed it. Accompanied by a percussionist and string quartet, Rostam brought songs from his 2017 album Half-Light to life with precise, perfect detail. Opening with “Don’t Let it Get to You (Reprise)”, the talented multi-instrumentalist touched on each aspect of his discography with the string quartet adding a beautiful, previously unheard weight to each song. The joy in the room was evidenced by Rostam’s infectious grin as he sang each song; whether it was the Persian strings of “Wood” or the pounding drum line of “Bike Dream”, each twist and turn was stunningly beautiful and turned Saturn into a makeshift symphony hall on a rainy Monday night.
