ONES TO WATCH: Hangout Music Festival 2016

Date:

by Emilee Aldridge

Heading down to the Gulf Shores, Alabama next month for music and fun? Hangout Music Festival is right around the corner (May 20-22) and we couldn’t be more excited! We have The Weeknd, Calvin Harris, and Florence and the Machine headlining the 6th annual event, and since they are definitely on our schedules, what about the rest of the weekend? What smaller-to-midsize bands should we be making great efforts to work into our schedules? I have compiled a list of some must see’s for the weekend (other than our beloved headliners of course) to help you fill in the holes in your schedule! Enjoy!

BAND: Powers
FROM: LA/NYC
WHEN YOU CAN FIND THEM: Sunday, May 22
WHY WE LIKE THEM: If you love to get down on the dance floor, then Powers is definitely the band for you. Always looking for an excuse to bust a move, I have found a love for electro-pop music. I particularly enjoy Powers because they are a perfect band to make you let your hair down and let loose.
LISTEN: Beat of My Drum, Legendary, Hot

BAND: Alessia Cara
FROM: Toronto, Canada
WHEN YOU CAN FIND THEM: Friday, May 20
WHY WE LIKE THEM: Aside from appreciating her overall talent, we love Alessia Cara because she is a badass 19 year old! How many 19 year olds do you know that are able to travel the world and play music festivals?! I remember perusing various Spotify playlists and coming across the song ‘Here’. In an industry that is constantly cranking out the latest party anthems, I was instantly drawn to the concept of writing a song exploring the side of people that may not enjoy the party scene.
LISTEN: Here, Seventeen, River of Tears

BAND: Bully
FROM: Nashville, TN
WHEN YOU CAN FIND THEM: Friday, May 20
WHY WE LIKE THEM: Female fronted bands are what I live for. I find myself very attracted to Bully’s grunge garage rock kind of vibe. Songwriting, guitar smashing lead vocalist Alicia Bognanno is a prime example that women in music do have the talent to hang with the boys.
LISTEN: Trying, Milkman, Too Tough

BAND: Courtney Barnett
FROM: Melbourne, AUS
WHEN YOU CAN FIND THEM: Sunday, May 22
WHY WE LIKE THEM: We need more women in rock n’ roll! Through her music, Courtney Barnett exudes strength and confidence while also exhibiting a sense of vulnerability. This is definitely an artist to listen to when you are searching for the motivation to tackle the day in front of you.
LISTEN: Pedestrian at Best, Elevator Operator, Three Packs a Day

BAND: Magic Man
FROM: Boston/Providence
WHEN YOU CAN FIND THEM: Saturday, May 21
WHY WE LIKE THEM: Magic Man is a band that emits nothing but light. While delving into the emotions of love and loss, layers of synth create a feeling of triumph and jubilation. Magic Man is the perfect band to listen to in the warm weather, where you can roll down the windows, blare your music, and scream the lyrics at the top of your lungs.
LISTEN: Apollo, Texas, Paris
